Goddard Riverside SRO Law Project was founded in 1981
to provide free legal services and tenant organizing
assistance to low-income residents of single room
occupancy (SRO) buildings on Manhattan’s West
Side. Preservation of SRO housing is essential because
it is often the only housing available for some of
the most vulnerable members of our society.
The project helps tenants solve a wide array of problems,
including eviction,
rent overcharge, harassment, illegal construction,
lack
of heat and hot water, and other poor building
conditions. Owners often employ these as “emptying
tactics” in order to convert their buildings
to more profitable luxury, tourist or student use.
Today, the Project serves 2,800 individuals and families through
several initiatives:
- Free
legal representation in Housing Court for
SRO tenants;
- Tenant
organizing and legal advice to groups of
tenants on their rights and on how to represent
themselves with their landlords and before legislative
bodies;
- Goddard
Riverside/Columbia University Tenant Assistance
Project for families facing eviction and
other problems in Manhattan Valley;
- SRO
Tenants United, a coalition of SRO tenants,
organized by our Law Project in 1996, that works
to represent the views of SRO tenants at public
hearings and community forums and as well as in
dealing with problems and conditions in their buildings.

for individuals in our community. Donate
