January 4, 2007, we renamed Goddard Riverside’s facility
at 647 Columbus Avenue the Bernie Wohl Center. It houses our
Children’s After-School Program, Summer Day Camp, and
other community programs. The Campaign for Kids will raise $500,000
to transform the auditorium at the Bernie Wohl Center into a
theater that will serve as a multi-purpose space for our youth
programs as well as a much-needed neighborhood venue for performances
and community events.
Creating a theater where people come together from inside
and outside Goddard Riverside, old and young, homeless and
housed, able and disabled, is a tribute to Bernie’s
core belief in an open and welcoming community for all.
The West Side SRO Law Project, which Bernie founded to help
protect low-income tenants from illegal harassment and eviction,
is also located in the Bernie Wohl Center at 647 Columbus
Avenue. Its offices will be renovated, as will the youth staff’s
quarters.
We will upgrade the fire alarm system and install new floors,
to make the Center welcoming and safe for staff and all who
participate in programs there.
