he
Community Achievement Project in the Schools (CAPS)
is a program developed by the United
Way of New York City and the New
York City Department of Education to improve attendance
and prevent dropout among at-risk students.
Goddard Riverside is one of 80 community-based organizations providing
CAPS services in public schools in the five boroughs. We offer programs
in two local elementary schools, P.S. 84 and P.S. 165, which are
staffed by on-site social workers who provide individual counseling,
group work and family support services to students and their families.
Goddard Riverside’s CAPS programs serve 180 children and their
families each year.
Our CAPS staff work closely with teachers to identify students
who are struggling with academic, social, familial or personal problems.
The CAPS program offers these youth a safe haven from school and
home where they can interact with an adult role model and benefit
from activities in a range of program areas, including: tutoring,
counseling, parent and family involvement, conflict resolution,
peer-to-peer support, youth leadership development and more.
