Riverside’s Safe Haven and Housing Options programs prepare
homeless individuals with mental illness for permanent housing and
then arrange appropriate placements. Both programs are designed to
meet the complex needs of this population, many of whom also struggle
with addictions, developmental disabilities, and chronic medical conditions.
Safe Haven is a transitional housing program that
provides private living accommodations, meals and
a range of on-site and referral services. Services
include assistance with daily living skills, psychiatric
and medical care, medication management, entitlement
and budget counseling, substance abuse counseling,
training in independent living skills, and recreational
activities. Safe Haven includes 15 single and double
SRO units, a common lounge, kitchen, program space,
and offices for staff. Residents may attend our psychosocial
program at The Other Place (TOP)
or training for competitive employment at the TOP
Opportunities job program.
Our Housing Options program works with Safe Haven
residents and other clients served by the Project
Reachout continuum. It draws on its relationships
with dozens of supportive housing providers. Staff
writes the applications, accompanies clients on housing
interviews, advocates for clients, and ultimately
moves clients into their homes. Housing Options annually
places over 50 clients in permanent housing and provides
follow up to ensure that individuals are comfortable
living independently. In addition, it involves clients
with advocacy on housing and mental illness.
