Wood, Community Organizer and Director of the Family
Council at Goddard Riverside Community Center,
is the recipient of the first 2007 UNH Award for Achievement
in Civic Advocacy. This award has been made possible
by a bequest from Julius C.C. Edelstein, former UNH
Board member and tireless advocate for disadvantaged
people.
Larry Wood's commitment to grassroots organizing and
advocacy around issues of social and economic justice
is well known throughout the UNH system and New York
City overall. He has worked tirelessly in the Upper
West Side community served by Goddard Riverside, and
on a City-wide basis with UNH and its member agencies,
and in broad coalitions, around such vital social
issues as housing and homelessness, funding for human
services programs, public education, senior services
and voter registration. In the words of Goddard Riverside
Executive Director Stephan Russo, "Larry Wood
is the quintessential organizer and proponent of civic
engagement." In the inaugural year of this award
UNH will present Larry with $1,000
Larry in action in NYC, Albany
and Washington
