GODDARD RIVERSIDE COMMUNITY CENTER
DAY CAMPERS PERFORM AT END OF SUMMER SHOW
160 Goddard Riverside Community Center summer day
campers lit up the stage in a show highlighting their
summer of fun and learning. Children, ages 5 to 13,
incorporated the storytelling summer learning theme
into skits and songs, acting out stories from Caribbean,
Latin American and African folktales; fairytales from
near and far lands; legends; fables and Egyptian myths.
Youngsters dazzled the audience with their singing
of the civil rights tune “If I Had a Hammer,”
engaged viewers with their rendition of “Seasons
of Love” from the musical Rent and demonstrated
their knowledge of Egyptian myths through their performance
of “Se-Osiris and the Sealed Letter.”
Goddard Riverside serves nearly 4,000 children and
youth annually through school-based, after-school,
summer, evening and weekend programs. The majority
of young people come from low-income families who
live in the surrounding neighborhood and are facing
many challenges on the path to adulthood. Goddard
Riverside programs provide safe, structured activities
and the chance to interact with positive role models.
Goddard Riverside Community Center provides services
to 16,000 people each year from Manhattan’s
Upper West Side and Harlem communities. The agency
manages 600 units of affordable housing. Goddard Riverside
advocates for justice and enriches community life
with recreational, cultural and arts activities. Twenty-two
programs at 16 sites reach out to children and youth,
homeless people and older adults.
