EVENT:
GODDARD RIVERSIDE
COMMUNITY CENTER PRESENTS
“ON REFLECTION” PHOTOGRAPHIC NARRATIVES
Photographer Ellen
Eisenman explores her dual career as artist and settlement
house worker
In “On Reflection,” an exhibit currently
on view at Goddard Riverside Community Center, photographer
Ellen Eisenman reflects on what she calls, “The
work of creating—buildings, art, relationships,
community.” Ms. Eisenman’s large-scale
pieces stitch together photographic fragments that
celebrate working people. A shovel, hands mixing concrete,
children carrying water—combine in patterns
that call on the narrative tradition of quilting while
maintaining the essential value of documentary photography.
Sewn photographs are fixed in place with nails, pins
and wire and are accented with glass and metal beads.
Seamlessly intertwining her photography and her group
work at settlement houses, Ms. Eisenman’s pieces
create dialogue, illustrate inequities, build communities
and seek social change. Ms. Eisenman has been involved
in community work since 1969. She retires from her
post as Associate Director at Goddard Riverside Community
Center at the end of September 2007 to spend more
time on her photography.
