in a crisis, a hand with Medicare paperwork, an escort
to a doctor’s appointment, an invitation to
an afternoon movie – these can make all the
difference for an older adult living alone. Without
family nearby, many older adults in our community
face the threat of premature retirement in an assisted
living or nursing home facility.
Through on-site services at three local Mitchell
Lama co-operatives, our NORC (Naturally Occurring
Retirement Community) program helps some 475 of our
older neighbors live safely at home for as long as
possible. NORC provides the extra support that elderly
residents need to age in place. Social workers in
each building provide case management and health care
information plus classes, social activities, and trips.
A committee of residents and building board members
share in management of the NORC Program.
