| onday
through Friday, rain or shine, our Senior Center is
bustling with activity. Breakfast and lunch draw a
daily crowd of over 250 members from the surrounding
neighborhood, and activities such as art, exercise,
choir, Spanish and English classes and birthday and
holiday parties bring in members who live as far away
as New Jersey.
Membership is free to anyone over 60. Our 3,000 members
come from diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds
and live primarily in nearby public housing or low-income
residences. They are actively involved in running
the Center alongside staff so its services and calendar
of activities reflect members’ needs and interests
– whether they need help understanding Medicare
or want to go to museums, plays,or
take a trip to the country. Health screenings, case
management, legal assistance, and hands-on help with
managing money round out the Center’s offerings
to help older adults live independent, enriching lives.
Members also work with staff to reach out to their
homebound peers through our Senior
Outreach program. Volunteers phone or visit about
75 Center members who are homebound, hospitalized
or have moved to nursing homes. Our goal is to enable
elders to remain in their own homes as long as possible.
We provide practical supports to address deteriorating
physical health issues and almost any other personal
problem that older adults are likely to be confronted
with.
