Training
Foundation and Framework for College Access Counseling Course
Fall 2007 course dates: September 26, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, November 7, 14
Spring 2008 course dates: January 23, 30, February 6, 13, (no class Feb 20), 27, March 5, 12, 19

This 50-hour introductory course, administered by trainers with 5-15 years of experience in the college access field and expertise in training others in this area, is designed for social service professionals interested in developing or improving their skills and capacity to deliver quality college counseling. The eight sessions of the course provide:
  • A comprehensive and in-depth look at all aspects of college access counseling, from initial intake to readying a student for college;
  • Relevant examples and case studies so that trainees can apply the information to real situations;
  • Hands-on experience with tools and resources that they can use after the training; and
  • Upon completion of the course, a training manual, membership in the OPTIONS college access e-mail listserv, and access to other technical assistance to be arranged with the training staff.

Course space is limited, and registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is the course is reserved after acceptance of the application and receipt of payment for the $300 materials fee. Early registration is recommended.

Technical Assistance
OPTIONS provides technical assistance and consulting services to programs in various stages of developing college counseling programs. These services include:

  • Phone, email, and in-person consultations with OPTIONS counselors and trainers;
  • On-site advising on program office set-up;
  • Consultations on program expansion; and
  • Assistance developing and evaluating college counseling tools and materials.
