Riverside’s REACH program is directed at students
in grades 6 to 12, from low to moderate income families
who have limited knowledge of and access to higher education.
The purpose of the program is to make them aware of
available educational opportunities and to help the
students begin to focus on high school, college and
career issues. All students in the program are matched
with a volunteer tutor/mentor with whom they meet weekly
throughout the school year.
This tutoring program:
- helps students better
understand classroom material and improves their
academic performance;
- aids in developing organizational
and time management skills,
- teaches students how
to approach academics, tackle perceived obstacles
and become responsible young people;
- encourages students
to aim for achievement, organize their future plans
and continue their education;
- increases their awareness
of the importance and availability of college and
career options through group activities and trips
to college campuses and workplaces.
Participation in the REACH program helps students
think about their futures and sets them on a course
to achieve both short and long term goals. Students
are encouraged to continue with REACH throughout middle
school and high school and to go on to work with OPTIONS
college counselors.
